Astrid Botto

Astrid Botto, accessory designer inspired by Guatemalan colors, fabrics and nature. Creator of earrings, necklaces, bracelets all handmade and unique

My dream is to see the one-of-a-kind jewelry items I make appear on a runway model in a prestigious fashion show. Maybe even on the cover of a famous fashion magazine! Why not?

In 2002, I began designing and creating accessories for myself while still in school just for the sheer joy of it. Soon my classmates asked me to make them pieces of their own. Soon I knew that I had the ability to create products that help make women feel comfortable and elegant for any occasion.

I use an unusual mix of materials for my jewelry and accessories. Some of the larger pieces may look heavy, but they're not. They are coils of colorful Guatemalan textiles that I use in combination with a wide range of semi-precious stones like pearls, turquoise, onyx, crystals, pewter and all kinds of threads.

Every piece is handmade by myself, and is unique. However, when orders are large I give work to local single mothers, who I have taught the skills I taught myself over the years.

I am thankful for the opportunities provided to participate in the International Handicraft Show in Florence, Italy in 2014 and 2015. Today my work appears in stores in Antigua, Guatemala, and now reaching the entire world through Wola!

When a woman wears my jewelry and she feels happy about herself, that is my delight. I know that I've succeeded in sharing my love for nature, the women I work with and the landscape of my beautiful Guatemala.

A percentage of sales is used to train artisans at the San Antonio Palopó Coop in Sololá, Guatemala.
